Vice-Chancellor's Comment
Research is the lifeblood of any great university. In New Zealand, universities are institutions where teaching is primarily undertaken by those engaged in research and scholarship. It is therefore of crucial importance to us at the University of Otago that we value and support our research activities and our most important asset, our staff.
As New Zealand's oldest university, Otago has a long established tradition of research excellence. Since its foundation in 1869, the University has steadily increased its teaching and research activities, while building on its original strengths in Medicine, Law and the Arts. Today the breadth of Otago's expertise reaches across diverse fields of academic endeavour, and in particular its strength in Health Sciences is internationally recognised.
The University is committed to maintaining and expanding its research programmes through the active support of existing areas of expertise as well as encouragement of emerging fields and individual scholarship.
