The Southern Alps of New Zealand provide world class mountaineering in a unique environment, encompassing ocean views, rain forest and glaciated mountains. Challenging terrain, isolation and mountain weather all provide serious mountaineering.
Fox Glacier Guiding instructors can guide you on ascents to suit your ability and level of fitness. There are numerous options from single day adventures to a multi-day ascents programme, including:
Trips operate from November to the end of April.
Guided Ascent: Mt Tasman 3497m
Standing proudly at the head of the Fox Glacier, Mt Tasman is the highest peak in Westland National Park and the second highest in New Zealand.
Based at Pioneer Hut, climbers usually ascend over Mt Lendenfeld and onto Tasman via the North Shoulder. The climb requires a high level of fitness and mountaineering experience. The summit day will be long (15-20hrs), in demanding terrain. Trip duration is six days to allow for pre-summit training and suitable weather.

Guided Ascent: Mt Sefton 3151m
The climb of Mt Sefton begins with a spectacular helicopter flight, slowly winding through the mountains to the Douglas Glacier, where camp is set up. The ascent day follows with a difficult route through a maze of crevasses onto the west ridge of Mt Sefton. Pitched climbing and short roping on snow and ice leads to one of the most fabulous summits in the Southern Alps. Return to camp, via the ascent route, takes approximately 8-10 hours.
The following day, climbers descend the Tekano Glacier into Scott Creek and finally, Welcome Flat Hut for a well-deserved soak in the natural hot pools, 8-12 hours. The final day follows the Copland River on a formed track to the highway.
Clients require a high level of fitness to enjoy the long days in rugged terrain.

Guided Ascent: Mt Cook 3754m
"The story of Aoraki is about four brothers: Aoraki, Rakiroa, Raaraki and Rarkiroa. They all lived in a special place in the heavens, where they had everything they could ever want. One day, they climbed into their magical canoe and descended from their home in the heavens and sailed across the great ocean. Eventually Aoraki and his brothers decided that they should return home to comfort their mother who had remained in the heavens. Aoraki stood in the magical canoe and began the sacred chant that would make the canoe rise back into the heavens. But he made a mistake in the chant and instead of returning to the heavens, Aoraki and his brothers became snowcapped mountains. Aoraki, the eldest of the four brothers, was the tallest peak of the mountain range and is known today as Aoraki of Mount Cook, with his brothers sitting on either side of him."
Mt Cook is New Zealand's highest and most prized summit. Sitting slightly east of the main divide its sheer size and massive bulk has caught the eye and imagination of passing climbers and explorers for over 100 years.
Our preferred climbing route is up the Hooker Valley "the quiet side of the mountain" away from the often over crowded Grand Plato. The Hooker Valley is a walk in and out trip, following in the footsteps of the first ascent team. The routes in the Hooker Valley are more difficult than the most common ascent route; the Linda Glacier. So serious is the technical nature of the climbs that this trip includes the cost of two guides. If you have climbed with your guide before, they may opt to climb with you one on one.
Before you attempt Mt Cook you must be fully prepared technically and mentally. Depending on your current level of ability and experience we may recommend that you undergo an Alpine Ice Introduction Course. This ensures that your snow and ice techniques such as cramponing, ice axe use, rope skills, and fitness are at a level that will enable you to achieve a safe and successful climb.
