Perisher Blue
Perisher is an excellent large ski resort. It consists of four main areas, which are;
blue cow , which has the three supposedly ‘hardest’ runs in the world, The wall, Kamikaze, and Zali’s (named after world champion Australian Skier). Blue cow is fairly small, and has runs mainly for advanced skiers. Blue cow connects to Perisher using an underground train.
Perisher. is the largest of them all, with its own luxury hotel. It has an underground train that connects to blue cow. Perisher has black runs like ‘ The black widow’ Blue runs like ‘fanfare’ and green runs (for beginners). It also has a flat with moving carpet and a rope tow for training before a beginner can actually ski on the mountains. It also has a newly built halfpipe.
I enjoyed skiing at Perisher. I thought that it was good because it was very large with a large variety of courses, ranging from skill to skill. It also is the Centre of all the snow fields, and has access to the rest.
Smiggans Is the place that I stay at. It has Smiggans Hotel, which I find is the cheapest and best, and the snow field has a beginner flat with a rope tow and carpet, and it has a J- bar beginner run, a chair lift intermediate run, and four T bar advanced runs. It also has a long ski track that connects to Perisher Blue. Smiggans is for all levels of skill. I began learning skiing at Smiggans, and I recommend to you that it is good for learning.
Smiggans is my favorite of all the snowfields, for no particular reason. It is fairly small, having only 6 courses, but when I’m here I feel freer, because there if lots of free, untouched land with fresh fallen powdery snow. Sometimes I create my own courses, and ski along, with untouched nature at my side
Guthega is a fairly small mountain, which has one main run, which is the largest Ski run in Australia. It is for highly advanced, with sharp sudden turns, obstacles, powdery then hard icy snow, then it changes to dark lighting, then light, and then there is flat, then really steep, then uphill! It tests all skills of the skier/ snowboarder, and tells them whether they are able to pass the skiing levels (1-7), [then you can become a professional]. Guthega is right by Blue cow, and I find it a very hard test to complete this phenomenal course.
Guthega isn’t a place you can stay at. It is just one weird mountain, and being right next to blue cow, it is accessible to all other fields. Guthega is a fun place but it is only for an advanced skier.
Passes
Skiing passes are available to buy separately, but usually come in a package with your hotel. They are alot cheaper in the package, i have noticed. There is the basic kids package, which is an all day course, including lunch. If it is your first year skiing, you have access to all lifts in that field. For seconed or higher years, you have complete access to any lift in Perisher Blue.
The adult package comes with a 2-hour lesson. If it is your first year skiing, you have access to all lifts in that field. For second or higher years, you have complete access to any lift in Perisher Blue. Same rule as the Kids one. At Smiggans if you buy the kid’s package, it comes with access to the kids club. Which includes dinner, and then access to the actual club, which has games etc. while the Adults relax or have their dinner in the five star licensed restaurant at Smiggans hotel.
Accommodation
Accommodation can be found at all ski fields on Perisher. It can also be found below the snowfields, which mean that you have a bit of a walk to the actual runs. I recommend to book about 4 months prior to the season, as there is a long list for the on site hotels, and the ones away from the field are sometimes full.
I stayed at Smiggans hotel and chalet apartments. I think you should not get a chalet apartment, and stick with a basic room, as you will use your room to sleep only. The basic room is cheap if booked early, and contains comfy beds, a bathroom with a heated towel rack, and a television with cable access.
The hotel has great facilities, including a kid club, a nice room with a fireplace, free tea and coffee, and a cocktail bar. It has a fully licensed restaurant, a less expensive restaurant, a pub with pool tables and poker machines, and it has a small arcade with souvenirs, ski repairs and snow gear, and cafés.
Perisher is a fun place for anyone of any level to go to. It has beginner flat, easy courses, intermediate courses, hard courses, and very hard courses. So what are you waiting for, burn the snow in down under!
