Fishing in the North

Fishing the Tropical North. Cairns to Port Douglas

Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Be it for sport or leisure. We have all heard or told stories about the ones that got away, and the tales of it was this big (stretch your arms out as far as they go, and you'll know what I mean) . We have compiled a guide to the types of fish you are likely to catch whilst in Queensland and particularly the far north. For some mysterious reason, whenever I go fishing the fish seem to like every one else's hooks except mine.  I am sure you will have better luck than I do as is evidence by the many anglers that have recorded record catches for the various fish species listed here...

Guide to fishing in north queensland rivers and Great Barrier Reef

You will find all the latest information on recreational fishing at http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/. Rules and regulations laid down by the QLD fisheries department change from time to time and it is in your best interest to find out the latest rules with regards to bag limits and closed seasons.  So play it safe and keep within the limits. Information contained here in was obtained from the Great Outdoors Fish Guide pocket Book, compiled by the Queensland department of Primary Industries. Licenses are not required for recreational fishing in Queensland. Regulations do limit minimum and maximum fish sizes and gender for some species, maximum number caught per trip and the fishing apparatus used. Regulations also control the closures of specific areas to fishing and seasonal closures for some species.

Quick Tip. Fish dislike certain scents such as insect repellent and sun block lotions. If you are fishing and use these on your body, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before touching any bait or lures.
